Shubman Gill does not have a regular role assigned to him in the Indian team, but Gill is one of the most skilled batsmen among the new generation of Indian players in recent times. And Gill’s ability to bat at any batting position (especially as an opener and number 3 batsman) further highlighted Gill’s value.
Gill scored his century in the Under-19 World Cup as a number three batsman. Manjot Kalra and skipper Prithvi Shaw were assigned to open the Indian innings at that time.
Manjot’s unbeaten century in the final drew the attention of the Indian selection committee to Manjot. Apart from him, Gill and Shaw were among the next specialist batsmen looking to make it to the national team from the world champion Indian team.
Before Gill, his contemporary Prithvi Shaw won international caps, but Gill has been more consistent in Tests and ODI formats of late. In his short one-day cricket career, which is still in its early days, Gill shows a sense of camaraderie.
Gill’s role was as an opener when he won a Test call-up against the Aussies two years ago. Gill had two things to prove. Gill’s innings against the dominant Australian fast bowlers on the Australian pitches was praised by everyone.
Gill scored 45 runs in the first innings and 35 not out in the second innings. He finished his Test debut with an average of 51. He scored a personal best innings of 91 in Brisbane.
But apart from the first tournament, in the rest of the four-Test tournaments he played, it was a matter of everyone’s attention that he did not get the space to get into the runs. He last played a Test against England at Edgbaston last July.
He has accumulated 579 runs in 11 matches with 4 fifties. In the last few Tests, Gill’s average had dropped to 30 as he could not get into that many runs.
In 2019, Gill earned his ODI cap against New Zealand at Seddon Park. Gill, who scored 9 points in the first, 11 points in the second, and 33 points in the third, was able to play only three games for almost 2 years.
This fact is one of the main factors that show how important it is for an Indian player to be in the middle of the score. Karun Nair is the best example.
After two years, Gill will make his international debut against the West Indies in June this year. Gill scored 66 runs in the first match and Gill ended the tournament with 205 runs.
In this tournament, Gill was able to show his skills as an opening batsman. It is no secret that the reason for this is the success Gill got from several successful IPL tournaments.
As a result, Gill successfully entered the one-day series against the Zimbabwe team. Playing as an opening batsman in the first match, he managed to score 82 runs without losing, and Gill’s performance was 33 runs in the second match.
In the third match, he contributed to the Indian team as a number three batsman, scoring his maiden century and scoring 130 runs in 97 balls.
By the end of the tournament, Gill had shown that he could be consistent and adaptable at any position in the batting line-up.
This year he won the man of the match award twice and the man of the tournament twice against the West Indies and Zimbabwe. As Gill marked his second innings like that, Gill showed that he is as versatile a batsman as Sachin. He averaged 106 in ODIs as an opener and 44 as a number three batsman.
Still playing only 9 ODIs and 11 Tests, Gill will write the next golden chapter in the annals of Indian cricket.
